CrimeThe Anchorage Jail court room tends to have a somber mood and whenever I've covered the crime beat in person, the accused seem to be worn out, as if the only time they've had a reprieve is waiting for their charging documents to be read.
Alaska ExperienceAnchorage gets the whole ceremonial show of the Iditarod, a nearly 1.000 mile dog mushing race, but the real Alaska experience comes down to the last 100 miles when it pushes the teams' endurance along with all of the reporters covering the story because you never know who will surge ahead with victory.
Tracking StoriesHaving the foresight to track the stories and using some free tools available to journalists can make an engaging experience along with being helpful, such as when the newsroom asks "how many times...?," that answer will be backed up with the collection of stories.
Updating StoriesThe Shell grounding story starts off in a small conference room in the Frontier Building with only a TV web reporter (hi! that's me) and an Associated Pres reporter on a Sunday afternoon, then into a slightly bigger conference room in the downtown Marriott hotel with more local press who should be ringing in the New Year but will be spending the evening filing copy, and moves on to daily briefings at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention center with reporters from national magazines flying in, along with a PR team handing out USB drives with computer animations and suggesting you plug your audio into a molt box.
Engaging FacebookThat old media adage of "show it, say it," proves to be invaluable on Facebook. Providing a link will get a decent amount of shares, but providing a picture or video, well, that's worth thousands of shares.
Hashtag relavantJournalism conferences are fun because you can mingle with your peers and pick up a few pointers or new techniques, such as a sparktweet from a workshop during the Alaska Press Club conference. (It was also a lot of fun to host the 2013 award ceremony!)
GIFsCan GIFs exist anywhere but the web? Tumblr seems like the perfect home, but size restrictions force the moving image to be even more precise.It's also a place to reach a new audience, such as Pinterest and Google Plus, and not just pleasing your established followers on Facebook and Twitter.
KTVA TV LandI honed a lot of my photography skills by taking photos of co-workers during my period at KTVA Channel 11 and created a behind-the-scenes Facebook page called TV Land, showcasing more than 300 photos.
Magazine CreditI heard about a former classmate, who runs F Magazine, doing a street art issue, so I submitted some pics and was pleasantly surprised to see all of my pics featured throughout the issue, hence the cover credit.
